The detail behind the grille

A neat-looking vent can still hide an air leak.

The boot is the fitting that connects the duct to the register in your ceiling, wall, or floor. Both the duct connection and the perimeter where the boot meets the drywall or flooring need a proper seal.

Gaps can connect the room to an attic, crawlspace, or wall cavity. Pressure differences can pull hot, humid, dusty air through those openings—or push conditioned air out. A grille covers the opening; it does not automatically seal the gap behind it.

Duct to boot

The duct joint should be secure and sealed with materials suitable for the duct system. Duct insulation and its outer jacket also need attention.

Boot to drywall

The perimeter needs a continuous air seal to the surrounding surface. Sealing the duct joint alone does not close this separate gap.

Seal the unwanted gaps. Keep the intended airflow opening clear.

What about the “Venturi effect”?

You may hear that term used for air being pulled in near a register. We describe the underlying concern as air leakage through an unsealed opening: the pressure conditions determine how air moves. Not every boot leak is a true Venturi effect.

Good duct design matters

Even comfort starts before the first duct is hung.

A larger A/C is not a substitute for an air-distribution system designed for the home. Undersized paths, excessive restrictions, and poor balancing can cause weak or uneven airflow.

Start with each room’s needs

Windows, sun exposure, insulation, and room use affect the heating and cooling load. The duct layout and airflow should follow those needs—not just the size of the old duct.

Size and route ducts correctly

Duct diameter, run length, fittings, bends, and available blower pressure work together. Crushed or excessively sagging flex duct adds resistance and can leave the far end of the house short on air.

Give air a way back

Supply air needs a return path. A room with a closed door and an inadequate return path can develop a pressure imbalance, even when the supply duct is delivering air.

Balance and verify delivery

Register selection, placement, and balancing matter. Airflow and static-pressure checks help separate a duct problem from a filter, blower, or equipment problem.

Signs worth investigating

One hot room is a clue—not a diagnosis.

  • Rooms that stay warmer or cooler than the rest of the house.
  • Weak delivery, whistling, or unusually noisy registers.
  • Visible duct damage, disconnected runs, or gaps around boots.
  • Comfort that changes noticeably when bedroom doors close.
